Day, Night, Day, Night

Time to head back to San Francisco today. This time of year we experience an interesting phenomenon on this flight. We take off in the early afternoon, in daylight. Since we fly the polar route, the sun soon 'sets' and we are in darkness. Awhile later in the flight we enjoy a beautiful 'sunrise', and it is day once again. And then before landing into San Francisco, we are treated to another 'sunset'. The other strange thing is that the sun appears to be 'rising' on the western horizon.

This picture was taken during the second 'sunset' shortly before landing. The weather was stormy on the west coast, and these beautiful clouds were the source of a rather bumpy approach.
