The Ghost Town
This is the atrium of what was once a thriving, busy shopping mall. When it opened in 1977, it was THE place to shop, home to Bloomingdales and many other fashionable shops. It housed movie theaters, a very large multi-level Borders Bookstore and a variety of popular restaurants.
All the stores except one have closed and the mall will soon be torn down and replaced by an urban center of streets with shops and restaurants at street level, and apartments and condominiums above.
I went there today to see what it looks like now that everything is gone. I found the doors open and all of the escalators running. There were no people and no signage or traces of any of the previous retail tenants. It was quite an eery experience, almost post-apocalyptical.
The dome in the center is the top of one of two glass elevators that went from the bottom level to the two upper levels. I took quite a few shots and chose this one because it best showed a hint of what it once was and the current expansive emptiness.
