Today's the day ..................... for witchcraft

We meandered our way home today via Clitheroe and the Trough of Bowland.

At no time in the past couple of days have we been much more than 30 miles from home - and yet we have seen such a contrast in the scenery that we might have been in a completely different country. I suppose that's one of the blessings of living on this island of ours. And everywhere you go there are interesting places to visit - with stories to tell.

This very characteristically-shaped bit of upland to the east of Clitheroe is called Pendle Hill. In the autumn of 1612, twenty persons, of whom sixteen were women of various ages, were committed for trial at the assizes at Lancaster - for witchcraft. The story of the Pendle witches is one of the best-known and well-documented examples of alleged witchcraft in 17th-century England.
