The High Sheriff

He paid a visit to our school today to talk to the children, in full dress including ceremonial sword. He was a very engaging gentleman. The office of High Sheriff actually dates back to Saxon times when they held many powers, which are now bestowed upon the Lord Lieutenants, magistrates, coroners and even the Inland Revenue! Now their duties are mainly ceremonial, but I couldn't help thinking he couldn't have been further from the character of the Sheriff of Nottingham.
