Native beech trees don't like it here

This row of native beech trees (Nothofagus spp.) were planted on the then new subdivision some years ago. In this very exposed situation, they have survived, but not thrived. They are forest trees, and under natural conditions will re-colonise into gaps created by wind events, etc, but rarely establish as individual trees except in sheltered locations.
