Steps from the shadows

Today I helped someone reclaim her name, lost in a marriage that itself was lost. She thought that unless she could afford a divorce, she wasn’t allowed to throw off the name that wasn’t hers and to become herself again. I thought she might need some time to try it out but she didn’t. We wrote out a deed poll, she signed it twice and I was proud to be one of her two witnesses.
