Arnside Viaduct

Arnside Viaduct was built in 1857. The original iron girders which supported the track bed had to go down a very long way before they reached firm ground. They endured until 1915 when because they were beginning to deteriorate they were encased in the concrete filled brick pillars which we see today.

There are 50 brick pillars. They are very difficult to count from the shore. A few years ago I wrote an Arnside Treasure Hunt which included the Question on the number of pillars and lots of people got the wrong answer.

A couple of years ago the viaduct was closed for sixteen weeks when the whole of the trackbed and railings were renewed. Network rail did a very efficient job which was completed on time and cost less than the £13M budget.
