Cooking pears

At least, that's what I think it is. There's a Dutch side dish called "stoofperen". It is usually something you eat during the winter time (which generally lasts a little longer than the Houston one).
You cook a specific species of pears in red wine with cloves and a cinnamon stick. Of course I couldn't find the right pears for this dish, so I used the red Anjou ones. I have no idea if this is going to work, but yet, the whole thing needs to simmer for a few hours and it already smells delicious in our kitchen. Even if it turns out that the whole dish is not edible, it was worth the smell :-).

In the meantime I'm preparing the home made apple sauce, the cranberry sauce and the sweet potato casserole for tomorrow. This is the first time we are trying to cook a more traditional Thanksgiving dinner with turkey and side dishes. Usually we prepare a leg of lamb, because a turkey is too much meat for the four of us.
This year we invited some Dutch friends for dinner and with us being the only "real" US citizens, we felt we had to serve our guests a turkey for dinner.
We'll see if we passed the test tomorrow.
