Dyrham Park NT

It had been a while since I had visited Dyrham to see the deer. Dyrham Park is largely closed for the winter now (except at weekends) but there is open entry to the park itself, and having parked and set out on foot I was pointed in the direction of the herd by a couple making their way back to their car. After quite a long walk I saw one doe crossing my track and she led me directly to the herd, the bucks, does and fawns all together.

After awhile, a warden came up on his van and started feeding the deer with sheep nuts. I had a chat to him and learned that a couple of the deer, including the one in the blip, were melanistic.  This is when the dark-colored pigment melanin in the skin has developed more than normal.

I looked back at the scene as I returned to the car. When I'd left, I drove into the village of Dyrham and travelled via Great Chalfield on the way back, stopping briefly at Great Chalfield Manor.
