I am fairly sure that this wall does not date from the 1790s when the New Town was laid out and built. I think it look this was added onto the facade of the building around 100 years ago. So maybe because it's not so old these folks thought that it was fine to write on it.

I'm not sure that eating in a restaurant surrounded by photographs of people in relentless poverty would be the most ambient of atmospheres. And I don't think it's the best name for a restaurant. But then what do I know.
