154 Ruin NE side 1m
Next Sunday, orienteers on three of the eight courses I've planned in Saltoun forest will have to find this feature. Its symbol will be in the middle of a circle printed on their map and they will have the above description to help them. The ruin will have a small white and orange flag beside it, and a label with the code number (154) so competitors can check that they have got to the right feature. They will use a small electronic pen attached to one of their fingers to record when they found it.
Hopefully it will be as good a day next Sunday as it was today when I went round checking the sites of many of the 45 controls which the event will require. It takes quite a lot of work to put on an orienteering event, but thrashing round a sunlit forest, whether planning or competing, is cathartic for many.
Given the location and features nearby, I think the ruin is the housing for an old sluice gate for a mill.
