Globe artichoke

Thank you to all the kind blippers who gave me favourites for my pair of pelicans yesterday. They have proved to be my most popular blip in some months.

I love the shape, colour and form of this plant today. The globe artichoke is considered to be the 'true' artichoke and is the bud of a large member of the thistle family. The visual connection is extremely clear.

It has no relation of the tuber-like Jerusalem artichoke. The tender ends of the leaves and the base (or 'heart') of the bud are both edible. The tough outside leaves and the furry central choke and its surrounding leaves aren't.

Although I would not say that globe artichokes are a very popular food to eat in Australia, they are available virtually all year round.

Worth a look in LARGE.
