Bell the cat

The processional frieze in the hall at the Scottish National Portrait Gallery shows 155 Scots who were important in the history of Scotland. What puzzled me was that one was wearing armour and was the only one whose face was hidden and he was called Archibald Bell the Cat.
Apparently the young James 111 was surrounded by inefficient men as advisors rather than the powerful Lords so one of the Earls, Archibald Douglas was chosen to get rid of the king’s favourites. The most important ‘cat’ who manipulated the royal ‘mouse’ king was Cochrane so in 1492 Archibald managed to capture him and at Lauder Bridge hang the others who were trying to influence the king. For accomplishing such a dangerous task he became known as Bell the Cat.
Blind Harry standing beside him was a famous blind poet who wrote the first lengthy account of William Wallace and often recited poetry and told stories in the royal court.
