Perfectly Prickly!
I've noticed the berries on the holly and many other plants are plentiful this autumn, such a bright red on the gloomiest of days. We've also been doing a lot of clearance work in the garden and I was finding it increasingly frustrating that I couldn't seem to pick up even the smallest of holly branches without getting stabbed, and I mean stabbed!! I decided to look at a leaf carefully to see why they were so evil and the answer was quite clear, their prickles protect them brilliantly as they point in so many directions :-(
Why then I wondered, do the squirrels leap through and along their branches with ease?
I don't see them licking their wounds like I was ;-/
