The 'Chemist'

As threatened last week (blip of 7th November) here is the other pharmacy ornament. The first one was the apothecary - this one represents a more modern pharmacy - about the time I started my apprenticeship in 1957 many pharmacies looked liked this - and were generally called 'Chemist's' - 'pharmacy' only started to come into common use from the 1960s when the qualification changed from PhC (Pharmaceutical Chemist) - which I was - to BPharm (Bachelor of Pharmacy). The difference being that the PhC was controlled and awarded by the Pharmaceutical Society and the BPharm was a university degree ( but graduates still needed to pass a Pharmaceutical Society exam in forensic pharmacy and undergo a period of practical training before being registered and able to practice in the community)
