"A lot of us want to help the poor on our own terms. We think that if they only had Jesus that they wouldn't be the way they are, they'd be like us...
"So we donate our dollars to downtown missions and pray that they will be successful at getting people...off the streets. It never occurs to us that these people aren't lost. They are just poor.
"We make the poor gather in circles and hold hands to pray. Or we put them in a room and preach to them for forty-five minutes before we feed them. That paradigm seems twisted to the Marine.
"'We don't feed the homeless so that we can preach the gospel,' he says, 'We feed them because that is the gospel.'"
