Super Mag. GX1, Leitz Summicron 50 DR, Bellows II

After my experiments with salt and sugar grain macros last weekend, I went hunting on my favorite used photo equipment sites for the "missing link". This comes in the form of an adapter which allows M-mount Leica lenses to be attached right to the front of the bellows attachment rather than just the lens head in short mount. The resulting combination with a 50mm lens produces a field of view approximately 4 x 5mm. and huge magnification. The adapter arrived in the mail yesterday. I went hunting around the house looking for something interesting to photograph under this kind of magnification and found some material in a stash of old South African coins. The Blip shows the ear and horns, the business end of a Black Wildebeest (White Tailed Gnu) which resides on a 5 Rand coin minted in 1994. A very similar gnu used to live on the South African 2c coin from the 1980s. Was it inflation, or did his stock go up that they moved him to the R5?;-) Anyhow, here he is in extreme detail.
