Dunkeld

This Highland village on the banks of the River Tay has a timeless quality, especially on a misty, late autumn day like today. Restoring the workers' cottages was one of the first projects undertaken by the National Trust for Scotland when it was set up in the 1930s. In Cathedral Square and The Cross, the Trust has restored 20 houses, some dating from the rebuilding of the town after the Battle of Dunkeld in 1689 (lower left). Although these private homes are not open to the public, the Ell Shop (lower right) named after the weaver's measure on the wall outside, is a charming gift shop run by the Trust.
