A railway viaduct remembered.

In 1846 the Furness line was opened linking Barrow in Furness with the west coast mainline at Carnforth. In 1876 a branch line was built from Arnside to Hincaster linking on across the Penines to the Durham coalfield. This brought coal to Furness where iron ore was available.

The line involved an embankment from Arnside along the Kent estuary (a splendid foot path today) and a viaduct across the River Bela. The agreement with Dallam estates, the landowner, stated that if ever trains stopped running on the line the viaduct must be pulled down.

Sadly this demolition came to pass in the 1960s. But now the viaduct is remembered. The new Milnthorpe branch of Booths supermarkets was built just a few hundred yards from the handsome viaduct and imaginatively incorporated an outline of the structure on its southern wall.
