Market in Charleston SC
We embarked today on a "mystery trip" to Charleston, South Carolina, which Marylee had planned for several weeks, to add spice to our life. She confirmed the destination late yesterday, but her intent is certainly being fulfilled. We left literally at the crack of dawn from Bradley International Airport south of Springfield on a 6:10 am flight; we had wondered whether there would be anyone at the airport, but in fact it was more crowded than we had ever seen it. Lots of early flights, by airplanes parked overnight (probably more cheaply than at bigger airports.
We napped after an excellent lunch at a diner near our motel on the outskirts (Marylee had shrimp and grits, a local specialty). Then we made a quick foray into the historical center as dark was beginning to fall. This is the "Market Hall and Sheds"-- designated a National Historic Landmark by the National Park Service. The market hall extends much further than the image on the right--at least 500 meters, with merchants offering a wide range of very high quality locally made products. I've marked the spot where I took the photo precisely on the map.
