Munich underground: 43/100 Karlsplatz (Stachus)

Karlsplatz (Stachus) underground station is located in the city center and is (along with Marienplatz station and the Sendlinger Tor stations) one of the most important underground stations in the network. Here two underground lines (U4 & U5), and all suburban train S-Bahn lines and all Tram lines have a stop. The station was opened in 1984 along with the other western stations of the U5 line, like Heimeranplatz or Hauptbahnhof (U4/U5), and was the eastern terminus of this line until 1986.

Because the underground tunnel has to pass under the suburban train tunnel here, Karlsplatz (Stachus) underground station, with a depth of 25 metres underneath the surface, is the deepest underground station in the network. Furthermore, the lowest point of the whole network (36 metres) is reached in the tunnel between this station and Odeonsplatz station.

The square above ground is officially named Karlsplatz (after Charles Theodore, Elector of Bavaria), but most Munich residents will exclusively call it Stachus (supposedly after a tavern that was located here).
