Inspired Workmanship

Every passenger using Lingfield station uses or passes this wooden handrail the majority on their way down the stairs on the homeward leg of their journey. A small minority on the morning journey to work in East Grinstead.

The handrail, presented as a continuous flow of wooden handrail is carved out of 5 pieces; the 'bends' are individually shaped and joined by a short section on the half-landing. the main 'runs' are single pieces. It has the look and feel of having been installed when the footbridge was erected in 1884.

It seems in sturdy condition and hopefully will continue to be a delight for years to come; running ones hands over its surface is spoilt a little by the many coats of paint but you can still sense the care of the craftsmen who made it 125 years ago.
