Wilf.
February 1918 - Wilf went off to France, to war. He never came back. Before he left he gave this watch to his sweetheart. Had he survived and returned to marry his true love I would not be here today. His sweetheart was my gran who later went on to meet the man who would be my grandfather. My gran gave me this watch many years ago before she died. I never really understood any of it.
Today I spoke to all 330 children at my school as we remembered all those who gave their lives. I talked about Wilf. One person who makes the tragedy of 900 000 seem more tangible.
I was so proud of the kids who held that two minutes silence perfectly as they paused and reflected beside our own poppy memorial.
Here's to you Wilf. Rest in Peace.
