Foggy Hollow

A few thousand years ago when the northern ice sheet retreated from Lothian, hollows abounded in the scoured landscape and water soon flowed in to form numerous lochs. The most famous of these was the Nor' Loch adjacent to Edinburgh Castle, but others included the Borough Loch (The Meadows), Gogar Loch and Corstorphine Loch. As Edinburgh developed, these lochs were drained and built upon.

This morning, at sunrise, colder air pockets of fog hung in the ancient loch hollows with the Pentland Hills like an island across the water. I watched the temperature inversion drifting across Corstorphine Loch until the rising sun heated the air enough for it to lift and rise above the city.
