Reflections on the Mack

It is almost six months since that terrible day in May when smoke billowed across the Glasgow skyline as fire engulfed the world famous Mackintosh building at the Glasgow School of Art.

After benefitting from one of the best summers on record to help dry out the building, a bespoke roof has now been fitted over the west section of the building. This will remain in place until the replacement roof is built as part of the restoration programme.

The Glasgow School of Art is now seeking an architect-led, multi-disciplinary design team to lead the restoration of the world famous Mackintosh Building to a fully functioning art, architecture and design school following the fire earlier this year.

A call for expressions of interest from suitably qualified teams has now been issued. The team as a minimum must include an architect, a structural engineer and mechanical and engineering consultants.

“The Mackintosh Building is studied in architecture departments across the globe as an example of almost unmatched design, with generations of architects inspired by Mackintosh’s masterpiece,” says Douglas Anderson, Estates Development Project Manager. “The chance to lead the restoration of this truly iconic building is a once in a life time opportunity and we are anticipating that there will be significant interest from design teams in the UK and beyond.”

It is anticipated that the design team will be appointed in spring 2015.
