Apple Core

Several epithets of beauty appeared
Useless behind the ficus tree
As sundry rays of sunshine smeared
On the wall, outlined in chalk.
The leaves died happily,
Drunk with too much water.
My feet dry humped
The shoes shuffling like so many cards
Wearing socks reluctantly. The rubbing
Of soles took me away,
I walked, touching the street with the competing
Tales of sweet oblivion sewn
Into it's every whispering bit of trash and dirt.
Discarded plastic Starbucks cups and shells
That used to hold cigarettes washed
Onto the curbs, they talked in commercial dialects
From the Midwest, saturated in activist rhetoric.
At home I wash myself in cold water
And dry before a fan set on
Medium, the towel beneath my feet,
I'm staring at a full length mirror
Dripping and
Thinking of
Proteus.
