Preparing to set sail
The port of Safaga is not pretty. It's functional and industrial. Grain and phosphates and ferries feature as well as the occasional cruise ship such as ours.
Yesterday we were berthed next to Mein Schiff, a German cruise ship a little larger than we are. Today we are next to the Star Pride (a six star member of the Windstar team).
The sea is stunningly blue (even though it's The Red Sea). Shimmering and sparkly sunshine and a great restful day after the long journey to Luxor yesterday. I've been lazy and not been ashore.
We are due to sail away at 5.00, heading for Djibouti City, the French Colonial capital of Djibouti (often a Pointless answer for those in the know).
It will mean two full days at sea, through Pirate country. We had our drill, we have our instructions - and you can see the razor wire which has been strategically placed. All ships sailing through these seas have to put this up.
The Arabian Sea. A world of contrasts. Unbelievable beauty, calm peacefulness. Frankincense trails, dramatic sands. And the risks of the modern high seas. Hence this blip.
