Tilford West Bridge, Surrey

There are two bridges at Tilford over the River Wey. Both are medieval and this one dates from the mid 13th Century. It was built by the Cistercian monks from Waverley Abbey nearby who would have farmed the land hereabouts. This bridge has been bypassed so traffic no longer uses it, but the East Bridge is in daily use. A modern bridge runs alongside this one, taking traffic towards Frensham. Tilford and Frensham are now separate parishes, but for centuries were part of the large medieval parish of Farnham, which was one of the largest in Surrey. The peace and quiet of Tilford was shattered this year following a double murder involving a shotgun, and the court case of which has just concluded last week at Guildford Crown Court with a life conviction.
