Day out in the big smoke

Ever since I saw Monty's Deli on Tom Kerridge's cookery show about a year or more ago, I have wanted to visit his stall on Roapwalk Market on Maltby Street to try his salt beef sandwich. Monty's is only open on Saturday and Sunday. Why? Well, Every week 40kg of beef brisket is delivered and then brined for 6 days in Monty’s secret recipe cure. Yes, it takes the rest of the week to prep the beef!

Anyway, today, I achieved that goal, and had a salt beef sandwich and it didn't disappoint. It was truly delicious. If there was one minor failure to meet expectations, it was the size of the sandwich. It was big, but unlike the one he made for Tom Kerridge, it wasn't huge. I will return, and next time, I will have salt beef and pastrami and I will 'go large'.

Another lovely find was Tozino, a genuine tapas bar where you can sit and have a drink, and order tapas as and when you fancy it. It's drinking with savoury snacks, unlike most attempts at tapas in this country where you are expected to construct an entire meal from a selection of mini dishes, most of which look and taste mass produced, and all of which are dumped on your table at the same time. We had olives, chorizo in cava and octopus in olive oil with alioli. I could easily have whiled away the whole day there, oh, and if you like Serrano ham, you can take away a whole leg for £700!
