2000 Years Ago...

...maybe Roman children were playing on these walls. This is the remains of the city walls of Calleva at Silchester. The Romans built the city in around 20BC, on the site of an iron age town. For some reason, the town was abandoned in the 6th century, but no one has figured out why. Reading University have been carrying out an archeological dig there for the past 18 years, but they have finished this year with no answer to the mystery. a few years ago we were lucky enough to visit on a 'dig' day, and see some of the artifacts that were being uncovered. It really was quite mind boggling.

It certainly was lovely to take a ramble along the wall on the warmest Hallowe'en day I can remember. We even had a picnic!
