It's Getting Spooky, Could This Be Black Shuck?
Halloween seems to start earlier and go on longer every year. The spookiness is reaching a crescendo.
I went deep into Dengie Hundred Deliverance territory early this morning to collect my sister and take her to Stansted. Mist was swirling around the marshes. Could this shape be the Black Shuck?
Black Shuck is said to be one of the oldest phantoms of Great Britain, with the name deriving from the Anglo-Saxon word 'scucca' meaning demon or devil. He takes the form of a huge black dog, and prowls along dark lanes and lonesome field footpaths, where, although his howling makes the hearer's blood run cold, his footfalls make no sound. There have been sightings in the Dengie area since the fifteenth century. The Darkness wrote a song about it.
Well no, this is actually a shot in poor light of my horsey friend's mane. It's weird in that it sticks straight up and separates into spiky tufts. :)
