Newcastle life

The past & the future

Newcastle's Centre for Life is a pioneering centre for science which opened in 2000. It includes a science museum, genetics clinics and research facilities including the 2nd lab in the world to perform stem cell research on human embryos. This large modern building curves around Times Square but within this central opening is an attractive, historic building which looks small in comparison. This listed building was built in 1840 and would have once looked grand in the centre of the cattle market. It would been the market keepers house and would have stood just outside of the city walls. The downstairs rooms were once office space for the market keeper and toll collector, whilst their families would live in the rooms above. In later years this building was used as a bank and more lately offices. I took a photo to blip as the contrast between the modern science centre, with DNA statue, is such a contrast to the building from the past.
