Bookmark from Carisbrooke Castle, Isle of Wight together with an image of one of the castle buildings.

I collect leather bookmarks from everywhere we visit and now have a collection approaching 150. This one (the bit on the left) is from Carisbrooke Castle and I bought it when we visited at the weekend. The building in the photo on the right is the Constable's Lodging. I took a load of shots of the castle and its buildings, but liked this one best, and added the bookmark to it for today's blip because the bookmark on its own looked a bit lonely.

The Constable's lodging within the castle existed in some form at the south-east corner of the Great Hall (on the left of this picture) since at least 1270. It went through a number of alterations over the centuries. One of its chambers was Charles I's first bedroom, and his first escape attempt was from its window. The building now has 3 floors, and following its restoration around 1856 the Constable's Lodging formed the house for the keeper of the castle.

The castle is also famous for its donkeys that turn the wheel to pull up water from the well. There are guided ghost walks and other activities, and a very interesting museum. Carisbrooke Castle is well worth a visit.

I have not caught up with commenting yet, and we are going to Oxfordshire tomorrow for the interment of my Mum's ashes, so I am a bit preoccupied just now. I hope to catch up soon as I don't like missing the fantastic images in your journals.
