Creag Meagaidh
My week of enforced idleness continued. A 14 mile 3 Munro 1400 metres of ascent, 300 mile drive for light relief.
I got Barry at 7, and drove through tempestuous weather until over Drumochter and it brightened considerably.
Along Loch Laggan, the trees were resplendent in autumn colour; back lit by the sun, creating a magical fairy tale ambience.
One other car in the car park, we donned boots and walked off with great purpose towards Coire Ardair. Through birch woods, the colour continued to dazzle and beguile - just brilliant. Ahead as we turned, the corrie was shrouded in cloud, and the cliffs at the far end where the glen comes to an abrupt and menacing end disappeared up into the gloom.
T shirts gave way to jackets as we started the steepening ascent into 'the Window, and as we doubled back onto the summit plateau, it was out with the compass to navigate through the mirk. 40 minutes later Creag Meagaidh was done; and we retraced our steps to the window, the cloud lifting as we reached the rim of the corrie, staring into the abyss.
Sharp descent led to not so sharp climb and soon we were on Stob Poite Coire Ardair and an expansive view with the threat of sun beckoned as a 3 mile walk at over 3000 feet lay before us.
Smiles, wind behind us, we merrily marched across to our final summit of Carn Liath. Grand views to the south and west and eventually we dragged ourselves off back to the car. A good day and none too taxing, considering.
Chip shop stop in Pitlochry and a rainy drive home.
One hot bath later and I was up town by 10 to say goodnight; interrupted by G - oops. On the back of Mel / Nic chat of the other day, it needs doing, but G needs told, not to find out.
Eventually left in early hours; I had boys to pick up at 9. Sleep oh so soundly.
