Kirkham Priory
A detour on the way home took in Kirkham Priory. This is an Augustine Priory dating from the 1120s. With links to Helmsley Castle and Rievaulx Abbey. The gatehouse is apparently a rare survivor and I was lucky that the sun put in a rare appearance as I took this photograph.
It is also noted for the part it played in D-Day with preparing the troops for ruined buildings and an opportunity to test waterproofing on vehicles in the nearby River Derwent. Winston Churchill and George VI paid a visit to meet the troops.
Managed to bash my knee on a rock whilst orienteering today. Thought I would run it off but it did not improve so decided to cut my course short. Although I enjoyed meeting up with fellow club members.
At least Richard had a reasonable run to make the journey worthwhile.
