Curled bark

I was spending too much time in front of the computer today, and eventually dragged myself away to get some fresh air and enjoy the last couple of hours of sunshine. I headed for some local woods, hoping to get the late afternoon sun casting shadows through the trees. When I arrived, I opened the boot of the car to get my camera bag out, and discovered I had left my tripod at home (ready to go by the front door!).

Most of the pictures I wanted would have been much more successful - and sharper - with a tripod. As it was, I had to wind up the sensitivity and do the best I could hand-held.

This shot of the curling bark of a fallen silver birch tree would have been better if I had focus-stacked, but that is virtually impossible hand held. Nevertheless, I love the shapes and textures on the trunks of these trees, so I shall go back another time for another go.
