Jaws

..lives again. Elsa had her brace (or is it braces?) fitted today. As you can see they invoked a extreme dramatic reaction which in Elsa's case is an indicator of success.

It amazes me that braces have become a fashion statement - kids want to have them fitted. Elsa was so keen that last week she made herself a pretend brace out of a straightened-out hair grip and some earring butterflies. Ingenious but bonkers.

In preparation for the big day she's also spent the last month watching YouTube videos about braces being fitted and interviewing classmates who've got them, for all their top tips and horror stories.

I presume that the ultimate aim is not to look like one of the best Bond villains ever, but I'm flummoxed as to the appeal. This morning Elsa denied that there is one but she's been soooo excited waiting for this day.

And on the way out of the clinic Elsa was delighted to receive a sponge bag full of strange toothbrushes and wax bits to keep everything clean. Such was her excitement that the receptionists guffawed and I wished I'd taken some wrapping paper. It seems her Christmas has come early.

So what is it all about? Any thoughts?
