Kangaroo Paws in suburbia
Well, those scrappy looking grasses on each side of our drive way turned out to be these fabulous kangaroo paw flowers, the state flower for Western Australia.
The last time we had them growing in our garden, it was in our bush wild garden in WA, so this was quite a pleasant surprise to see them in Victoria.
So called Kangaroo Paws because of the curve of the flower and the stamen that poke out like claws. Apparently in a mixed species setting, the flowers open and mature at different rates to avoid cross pollination. Clever, eh?
