Ancient Akrotiri

This is an archaelogical site on Santorini, excavation started in the 1960s and continues today. Akrotiri was covered in volcanic ash when the eruption took place in 1613BC, the people had left prior to that due to severe earchquakes and it was a thriving commercial centre with contacts around the Mediterranean. The wall frescoes and contents that survived have been removed, but these pots remain in place, which helps to bring the place alive. The buildings are still being slowly uncovered, some of them still deeply buried some metres below the current floor level.
