More than a foot

Enormous leaves on the sidewalk near Trinity Cathedral.

Something was needed to demonstrate the size of the leaves, so I placed my foot in the frame. The morning was magnificent, my favorite kind of weather: cool enough for long sleeves, warm enough for sandals.

These are my absolutely favorite sandals. I would buy more pairs, but they're no longer being made. This seems to be the case with everything. I'm given a thousand choices and I end up thinking, 'None of the above.' I just want what I had! But it doesn't exist anymore.

This problem shows up everywhere—even in church. The Nicene Creed in the Catholic and Episcopal churches used to be almost identical, which always made me happy. It was evidence of an underlying unity. A few years ago the Catholics made a mess of the Creed with a new, clumsy translation that included words like 'consubstantial' (which isn't even English!), and now the Episcopalians at Trinity Cathedral have thrown out the filioque clause. I just want what we had! But it doesn't exist anymore.

Sandal manufacturers and Christian theologians, it's time to turn over a new leaf.
