Stand off

We were on a tram heading down to the port from the northern side of Marseille's town centre when the tram had to stop because of this stand off.

A group of Kurdish protestors were angry at the French police who arrested someone, from the building in the background, suspected of recruiting young Kurds to join the PKK; the Kurdistan Workers Party - an outlawed separatist group fighting for a piece of land in Turkey. This was, apparently, one of a number of arrests in Europe.

The demonstrators were shouting slogans and the police looked a little fierce with their riot gear but all seemed peaceful, and we didn't hear anything later on in the evening to suggest things got out of hand.
