Apple day at the cafay
We had a seasonal celebration of that familiar fruit involving, first, an apple expert on hand to identify samples brought in. (I took three kinds from my garden: one was pronounced to be a Laxton's Superb, another was taken away for further deliberation, and the third he agreed with my opinion: 'horrible').
Each apple was cut up and judged on appearance, shape, texture, smell and of course taste.
Then we had a crew from a local care farm for vulnerable adults* using an apple press to make fresh juice, and finally I made apple Welsh cakes for sale to the punters along with other snacks. Oh and there was a talk about starting a community orchard.
The event wasn't mobbed but we had a steady trickle of people wanting a taste of what was on offer.
* Clynfyw Care Farm. If you're interested do watch their short video to see the sort of things they do which include, as well as providing the juicing service, charcoal making, farming, horticulture, handcrafting a range of products and refurbishing disability equipment for use in poorer countries (shamefully we throw most of it away when it's no longer needed).
On the duck front I'm pleased to report that, much to my surprise, the one who survived Monday's mink attack has recovered enough to make her way to the pond for a paddle and a nibble, despite her wounds. The attacks on her neck and wing are clearly visible but appear to be healing although her wing is trailing, possibly broken.
