Lost Village of Mardale Green

Day Five at LPH. The group split into three and six of us had a great day out starting at Hallin Fell on the bank of Ullswater, with lovely views of the lake. After a long week we were feeling tired so we declined the walk around it, instead we drove down to the end of the road and then walked a short way through the woods. After lunch we decided to change the plan as we weren't very inspired by the woods and couldn't really see the lake.

After a quick look at the map we drove to Haweswater, where we understood that the water had dropped to reveal the remains of the village. We had a few photo stops en route and then arrived at the far end. The water was certainly low and we were able to get down and walk along the well defined old street of the village and see the remaining walls of some of the properties that have been submerged since the valley was flooded in 1935 to create a reservoir to supply water to Manchester. It was quite moving standing in the old village, a real sense of history.

It has been a great week and it is over far too quickly. Although tiring it has also been refreshing and re-energising. Great company from the group and many laughs. Thankyou John and Gail for another superb week.

p.s
This is a backblip because my computer died on Friday morning! It also meant I couldn't see the number of stars and hearts you gave Thursday's picture. I arrived home on Saturday to find you had sent it to the spotlight even though I never saw it there AND it had reached the Blipfoto facebook page! Thankyou!

Happy 10th Birthday Blipfoto! Sorry there is no red balloon on this. Many thanks to all the staff for a great site!
