Leopard seal

What a surprise on our walk along Pegasus Bay - a leopard seal, sunning itself on the beach!

Usually found along the edge of the pack ice in Antarctica, they infrequently visit New Zealand.

This one was about 3 metres long, with no whiskers but a large head and muscular body, almost a slug-like appearance. It moved with ease and speed into the waves while we watched.

Another image here.

It's possible it is this one, still here enjoying the beaches around Christchurch.
