Nice Day For It

As the afternoon sun retreats, the fog eases it's way toward the beach. It's an American west cost thing - we spent the day walking and exploring the tidal pools and sea caves. You cold even hear the clicking of the Sea Ocean Barnacles Bicycles Calm Meditation.

Earlier, we were reminded of the power of the sea as a family decided to cross a seemingly still scene like this -on the other side of the beach - a little closer to the water - when suddenly, the parents found themselves just trying to stand their ground as a sudden surge of on-rushing water washed their kids away.

Well, the kids did the right thing, they just tried to keep their heads above the water as they were swept and swirled perilously close to the barbacle encrusted rocks. It only took a second or two to unfold. Two young kids with helpless parents looking on - the water is cold like Cape Town's Atlantic ocean - but the family was OK, a reminder about never turning your back on the ocean.

I did that once with a friend of mine, we were fishing on the cliffs at the Beacon Island Hotel in Plettenberg Bay - he and I decided to race each other to toward the hotel, but we forgot, we were meant to be standing lookout as his father and brother baited the hooks. When we stopped, and turned, we saw a wave rise out of nowhere, much higher than the cliff tops, I have never seen a wave so big, and in a few seconds it had thundered over the cliff top like it wasn't even there.

My friend nearly lost his dad and his brother that day as the wave swept them along the cliff-top and then dragged them back - when we got there they were hanging half over the edge of the cliff with the raging sea below. All the fishing gear gone.

Big respect to the awesome power of water, beautiful, but wild.
