a youthful curlew

I pottered off to Blackness Castle hoping to catch the waders lurking on the rocks again, but by the time I got there, the tide was on its way out, and the birds near the Castle were all hunkered down against the wind.

As I wandered off to go round onto the shore, I caught sight of this bird. When I put it on the computer, I thought perhaps it was a whimbrel, but one of my bird books says - "beware in autumn, young curlew have shorter bills like a whimbrel".
