living in a glass house

At three pm we were all taking a walk with our buggies. I was trying to put the boy I'm minding to sleep, with absolutely no success, ;) and Chickpea and Monkey wanted to bring their animals in buggies as well. It was all pretty cute but I didn't have the camera on me then. So you get Chickpea at around 10.30 this morning holding an elephant's tooth. I never realised an elephant's tooth was so big, and that's only half of it- the small half! There was a cultural event at Warrington museum related to the book 'We All Went on Safari.' The kids had a great time learning about Africa and looking at and touching the artefacts, including hippo skin, which is thicker than you'd imagine and bulletproof apparently. Actually, Monkey spent a lot of time doing puzzles in the corner but he still had fun.

This evening I learned that one of the teachers at our school has tragically, suddenly died. He was a brilliant teacher and so kind and funny. Such a sad, terrible end. Chickpea was being unkind to her brother and I was reeling in disbelief and told her she should always be kind to the people she loves as we never know when something sad might happen to them. She retorted, a bit quieter, "Like, they might die. Well, we will all die so it doesn't matter." I'm happy she can feel this way, that it doesn't matter. She hasn't yet lived long enough to have the horrible realisation that it does matter. That the people that are gone forever leave a hole in our hearts, in our communities and it will never be the same. RIP Mr. Lewis.
