Abandoned road

Although the county of Hertfordshire has some very pleasant countryside, I don't find it easy to take beautiful landscapes at its southern end, on the outskirts of London. Most views seem to include urban intrusions which aren't always very pretty. However, Blip keeps me exploring my local area to try and find new scenes and, today, I stumbled on this.

I had parked at the side of a main road and walked through a gap in the hedge to see if the field beyond offered any worthwhile views. There I found this old road, running parallel to the current busy main road. At first I thought it was just a farm track, but it has a proper tarmac surface which suggests that it was the original route between two towns on the northern boundaries of London, since abandoned when a newer, slightly better, road was built alongside.
