Blackfriars.

We were in this area of Newcastle today, so we reminded ourselves of the great history of this part of the city.
Dominican Friars were sent around the world to establish their religious order, and they arrived in Newcastle where they settled in 1239. They had little money, so this site was donated by three anonymous sisters and the first Mayor of Newcastle.
King Henry lll spent quite a lot of time at the Priory during his efforts to fight the Scots, and in return for their hospitality he gave them lots of white cloth, which they made into tunics, and they wore them with black cloaks. The story is that Newcastle United continued the tradition with these colours, and used it for their football strips.
Over the centuries the Priory was preserved by the Guilds who used the buildings.
It is now a restaurant, and a number of small arts and crafts shops.
There are now only five remaining Dominicans in Newcastle Upon Tyne.
