Nessebar, Bulgaria
The Old Town area of Nessebar has been a World Heritage protected site for many years. It has a beautiful location, a narrow peninsula, jutting out into the Black Sea and only accessible by a narrow causeway.
However, the location of Bulgaria means that various strong civilisations have conquered this area over the years.
Our excellent guide told us about the Thracians (Spartacus etc), the Hellenic period, and brought us up to date via the harsh years of the Turkish Ottoman Empire.
Nessebar had at least 40 churches but all were ruined and only one is still functioning as an Orthodox Church today.
The style of architecture was impressive and locally they have preserved much evidence of their rich past. The Archaeological Museum was clear and well laid out, with treasures from a gold hoard, amphora, and a basement with stunningly beautiful icons.
The walk around town was charming but we have lost our blue skies so the dramatic beauty was harder to capture.
It's also the end of their tourist season and many of the restaurants have closed or already started their redecoration etc for next year. So it was a quiet return to the ship (and a little doze in front of my tv in the cabin as I caught up with one of the brilliant lectures which I'd missed ).
It's a tough life :-)
P.S. Sorry about the lack of comments. It's cruise ship wifi....... Nuff said. I'll catch up when I get home.
Thank you for sharing my adventures.
